Christodoulides and Erhürman agree to weekly meetings on Cyprus talks

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman held a constructive meeting on August 26, 2026, lasting over two and a half hours at the UN Good Offices mission in the Nicosia buffer zone. The leaders agreed to hold formal meetings on a weekly basis, or more frequently if necessary, to push forward the peace process following the roadmap established during the recent visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The discussions covered the methodology of future negotiations, confidence-building measures (CBMs), and substantive aspects of the Cyprus issue. While the Greek Cypriot side characterized the meeting as a positive step, Tufan Erhürman noted that recent negative developments have hindered mutual trust. Despite these differences, both sides confirmed the appointment of members to the Civil Society Advisory Body. The Greek Cypriot committee includes Pantelis Poiitis, Alexandros Lordos, Amalia Avraam, Sofia Papamichalopoulos, and Marios Michaelides, while the Turkish Cypriot side appointed Ipek Borman, Erol Kaymak, Meltem Onurkan Samani, Arif Osum, and Ciandogan Ozkan.

The next meeting between Christodoulides and Erhürman is scheduled for September 2, 2026, at 15:00. This intensive engagement aims to prepare the groundwork for potential future high-level discussions under the auspices of the United Nations.
