Cyprus leaders agree to intensify meetings following recent discussions

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman have agreed to hold meetings on a weekly basis, or more frequently if necessary, in an effort to maintain momentum in the Cyprus peace process. This decision was reached during a three-hour meeting held on 26 August at the United Nations offices in the buffer zone near Nicosia airport. The leaders discussed the methodology for future negotiations, potential confidence-building measures, and preparations for a possible enlarged meeting under UN auspices. The next session is scheduled for 2 September at 15:00.

While the Greek Cypriot side characterized the meeting as a positive step toward continuity, the Turkish Cypriot leader emphasized that political equality remains the core issue to be resolved before progress can be achieved on other fronts. The government spokesperson also announced the members of a newly formed Civil Society Consultative Body's Steering Committee, which will include five members from each community. The body is intended to facilitate discussions on daily life issues.

Looking ahead, UN personal envoy Maria Angela Holguín is expected to arrive in Cyprus in early September to assist with the process. These intensive diplomatic efforts aim to yield results before the United Nations General Assembly in late September, where the leaders are expected to meet with Secretary-General António Guterres to review the status of the dialogue.
