Notorious escape artist arrested in Spain

Spanish authorities arrested an Albanian fugitive, identified by the initials T.T. and known as the "escape artist," in Tarragona on August 26, 2026. The suspect was the subject of a European arrest warrant issued by Italy, where he had been serving a sentence until 2048 for violent theft and drug trafficking before escaping from a high-security prison last December. His capture followed a violent struggle in which his associates attempted to intervene, resulting in injuries to two police officers.

The fugitive gained notoriety for successfully escaping from custody four times in Italy and Belgium. His methods included sawing through window bars and using bedsheets to descend, as well as climbing prison walls via a human pyramid formed by accomplices. At the time of his arrest in Spain, he was found in possession of two counterfeit IDs and two fake 500-euro banknotes. He is expected to face further legal proceedings related to his latest arrest and eventual extradition to Italy.
