Serial prison escapee arrested in Spain

Spanish police announced on August 26, 2026, the arrest of T.T., identified as Toma Taulant, a fugitive nicknamed the "master of escapes" who had successfully broken out of prison four times. The suspect was captured in Tarragona, northeastern Spain, following a European arrest warrant issued by Italian authorities. The arrest involved a physical confrontation, during which the fugitive resisted and his associates attempted to intervene, leading to injuries to two police officers.

Taulant, who was serving a sentence until 2048 for violent theft and drug trafficking, gained notoriety for his elaborate escapes. In December, he fled a maximum-security Italian prison by sawing through window bars and descending with bedsheets. His previous escapes include incidents at prisons in Terni and Parma, Italy, as well as a facility in Belgium where he utilized a human pyramid to scale a perimeter wall. At the time of his arrest in Tarragona, authorities discovered two fake identification cards and two counterfeit 500-euro banknotes in his possession.

The arrest concludes an international search for the fugitive. The authorities are currently managing the aftermath of the violent capture, including the injuries sustained by the police personnel involved in the operation.
