Stavros Malas presents roadmap for livestock sector reconstruction

On August 27, 2026, Stavros Malas, head of the Special Scientific Committee for the Reconstruction of the Livestock Sector, submitted two formal reports to President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Cyprus. The committee, which was established by the Council of Ministers on March 16, 2026, was tasked with creating a sustainable, modern model for the industry after the recent foot-and-mouth disease crisis.

The first report details the logistics for the reactivation of affected livestock units, with experts estimating that operations could resume between November and December 2026 following successful disinfection and veterinary approval. The second report proposes a comprehensive 12-year recovery and reconstruction program covering the period from 2027 to 2038. These proposals aim to shift away from an outdated operational model, though their implementation will require significant state funding and extensive planning.

Following the submission, it was agreed that the proposals would be presented publicly in the coming days to facilitate dialogue with stakeholders and agricultural organizations. The government will now evaluate the recommendations to determine the scope of implementation, considering the massive economic commitments required to execute the proposed systemic reforms.
