Authorities investigate recurring marine pollution on Limassol beaches

Recent reports from bathers have highlighted recurring issues with marine pollution in Limassol, Cyprus, including foam, unpleasant odors, litter, and unidentified substances in the water. Concerns have intensified throughout August 2026, prompting various stakeholders to investigate potential sources such as commercial vessels, yachts, marinas, and the malfunctioning wastewater treatment plant in Moni.

Following public outcry, Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanoli convened a meeting on August 27 with local mayors, including Yiannis Armeftis and Kyriakos Xydias, and environmental authorities to discuss enhanced monitoring and policy coordination. While the Deputy Minister stated that Cyprus's waters remain clean, officials agreed to intensify controls and work towards establishing a dedicated Coast Guard.

Separately, DISY MP Giorgos Karaiskakis has publicly called for immediate laboratory testing of the water. He intends to formally introduce the matter to the Parliamentary Committee on Environment when it reconvenes on September 9 to ensure public health and environmental protection.
