Persistent sea pollution in Limassol triggers public outcry and official meetings

Recent reports of waste, sewage, and unidentified substances appearing along the Limassol coastline have sparked significant public concern and political debate. Residents have documented incidents of foam, unpleasant odors, and debris, including reports from August 15 of swimming amid sanitary waste. Authorities met on August 27, under the chairmanship of Deputy Shipping Minister Marina Hadjimanolis, to address the issue. Participants included the mayors of Limassol and Amathus and representatives from the Department of Environment and local government organizations.

While officials claim the waters are safe for swimming, local mayors and opposition parties, including DISY and AKEL, are demanding greater accountability and a move from reactive measures to proactive prevention. Amathus Mayor Kyriakos Xydias noted that recurring pollution led to the loss of nine Blue Flag designations for 2026. The government is currently mapping potential pollution sources, which range from commercial vessels and fish farms to sewage treatment plants and construction drainage pipes. Opposition figures are pushing for more frequent, daily water quality testing and full transparency, arguing that current monitoring is insufficient for such a highly trafficked coastal area. The issue remains a focal point for parliamentary oversight, with future committee discussions planned to address the lack of coordination among state services.
