Colombia and Ecuador launch joint security operations with U.S. support

On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, U.S. Marine Corps General Francis Donovan, head of the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), visited Bogota to coordinate anti-narcotics operations with the administration of newly elected Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella. Since taking office on August 7, de la Espriella has prioritized dismantling organized crime syndicates involved in cocaine production, aligning his nation with the U.S.-led "Shield of America" alliance.

Simultaneously, the government of Ecuador announced a trilateral security strategy involving joint military deployments along the shared border with Colombia. Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo confirmed that units from both countries will conduct surveillance and offensive maneuvers against irregular armed groups operating in the region. These developments mark a significant shift in regional policy, as the administration of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa previously criticized the former Colombian leadership for a perceived lack of cooperation in combating cross-border organized crime. Washington is expected to provide strategic assistance and participate in these coordinated efforts, signaling a broader regional intensification of the drug war.
