AI-assisted brain tumor surgery performed in London

Neurosurgeons in London have successfully performed the world's first AI-assisted brain tumor removal at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The patient, 48-year-old Rhys Hibbert, underwent the procedure in May to remove an 11-millimeter pituitary tumor that threatened his vision. Details of the breakthrough were released following his successful recovery.

During the operation, the AI system analyzed live video feeds in real time, identifying and color-coding critical anatomical structures such as nerves and blood vessels. This allowed the surgical team to navigate a highly sensitive area where a one-millimeter error could have led to blindness, stroke, or death. Although the AI provided guidance, the medical staff remained fully responsible for all surgical decisions throughout the procedure.

Mr. Hibbert, a father of two, had been experiencing deteriorating vision due to the tumor, which was diagnosed two years ago. The medical team recommended the intervention after his condition began to impact his daily life. Experts, including Dr. Sophia Bano from UCL, noted that the technology is specifically designed to assist surgeons during delicate operations by recognizing tissue interactions and surgical tools.
