Municipalities in Paphos district plan to install surveillance cameras

Municipalities in the Paphos district have reached a coordinated agreement to install surveillance cameras in public spaces to combat vandalism and protect municipal property. The decision was formalized during a meeting held on Thursday, attended by the district's mayors, community representatives, and officials from the EOA (District Self-Government Organization).

Acting Mayor of Paphos, Angelos Onisiforou, announced that the initiative aims to enhance public safety and prevent the destruction of municipal assets, such as parks and government buildings. To proceed with the project, the local authorities have decided to submit a joint letter to the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection. The goal of this submission is to obtain the necessary legal authorization for the operation of the surveillance equipment.

This move comes as a response to recurring incidents of vandalism, with the presence of cameras intended to serve as a deterrent against future illegal activities. The authorities are currently awaiting a response from the data protection regulator to determine the next steps for implementation.
