Paphos municipalities plan to install security cameras in public spaces

Municipalities across the Paphos district have reached a formal agreement to install security cameras in public spaces, including parks, squares, and municipal buildings. The decision was finalized during a meeting attended by local mayors, community representatives, and officials from the Paphos District Local Government Organisation (EOA). Acting Mayor of Paphos, Angelos Onisiforou, is leading the initiative to combat recurring vandalism and protect municipal assets that suffer damage amounting to tens of thousands of euros annually.

To proceed with the project, the local authorities will submit a joint letter to the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection requesting the necessary legal authorization. The initiative aims to deter antisocial behavior, reduce the daily costs of repairing public property and graffiti removal, and enhance the overall sense of security for residents. The implementation of the surveillance plan remains contingent upon the approval of the data protection authority, which will oversee the compliance of the proposed camera network.
