New studies link extreme heat to wide-ranging health complications
Two new studies published in the journal 'Science Advances' have revealed that extreme heat is linked to a much broader range of health issues than previously documented. While dehydration and heatstroke remain primary concerns, medical evidence now suggests that heat stress contributes to skin conditions, physical trauma, and even an increase in traffic accidents. Furthermore, researchers estimate that approximately 590 million children under the age of nine are exposed to heat stress annually due to climate change.
To overcome the difficulty of tracking heat-related illnesses—often obscured in medical records by the specific condition being treated rather than its underlying cause—researchers from Northwestern University employed a novel genomic-inspired methodology. Analyzing 1,803 diagnoses across nearly one million emergency room and urgent care visits in Chicago between 2011 and 2023, the team examined clinical data during 100 days of extreme heat, defined as temperatures exceeding 33.7°C. The study highlights the systemic challenge of underreporting heat as a contributing factor in emergency medical care, emphasizing the urgent need for better diagnostic tracking to mitigate public health risks associated with rising global temperatures.
