Cyprus implements new welfare reform for persons with disabilities

The Cyprus government has initiated the implementation of a comprehensive social reform aimed at enhancing support for persons with disabilities. Under the new Law on Social Participation, Inclusion, and Independent Living, increased welfare payments were scheduled for distribution on August 28, 2026. This reform follows an initial payment of the Minimum Guaranteed Income on August 14. To support this policy, the government has secured an additional €106 million for the period 2026-2028.

The updated policy includes specific financial adjustments: benefits for individuals under 18 increase by €87, while those over 18 receive an additional €37. Furthermore, approved home care allowances are rising by 10%. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that these benefits are provided automatically without requiring new applications. Notably, the reform expands eligibility, including 629 tetraplegic individuals over the age of 65 who were previously excluded from mobility allowances. This legislation marks a shift toward greater social inclusion and support in the daily lives of thousands of citizens.
