Authorities identify suspect in 500,000 euro cryptocurrency theft in Limassol

Police in Limassol have identified 33-year-old Romanian national Mares Andreea Georgeta as the primary suspect in a major cryptocurrency fraud case. The incident occurred on August 23, 2026, when the suspect allegedly tricked a victim during a business meeting regarding the sale of shares in a foreign company. The victim, who was acting through the suspect as a supposed mediator, transferred 500,000 euros worth of cryptocurrency into a wallet as a guarantee for commissions. During the meeting, the suspect managed to obtain the victim's access codes and immediately transferred the funds to an unknown account.

The Limassol Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) has issued an arrest warrant for the suspect. Investigations revealed that the woman departed Cyprus on the same day the crime was committed. Consequently, authorities are in the process of issuing both European and international arrest warrants to facilitate her apprehension. The police have released her identity to the public and have requested that anyone with information regarding her current location contact the Limassol CID or local law enforcement.

Investigations into the theft are currently ongoing as police continue to trace the misappropriated funds and track the suspect's movements across borders.
