Calls for renewal and structural change within EDEK party

Following the party's failure to secure parliamentary seats in the recent elections, prominent EDEK members are calling for a fundamental restructuring. Savvas Iliofotou, a former mayor of Strovolos, stated that the election results serve as a clear directive for the party to undergo radical renewal, including the replacement of leadership, a shift in political discourse, and a change in internal culture. He emphasized that the focus should be on bringing in new individuals rather than relying solely on seniority.

Former EDEK vice president Sofoklis Sofokleous echoed these sentiments, advocating for a total reboot of the party. This process would involve re-registering all members, ending internal conflicts, and resolving ongoing controversies that have damaged the party's reputation. Sofokleous noted that he had warned of this decline for years, citing poor performances in the 2024 European elections and recent municipal votes. He argued that the party must abandon its cycle of internal introspection and accept collective political responsibility for failing to persuade voters. There is currently no formal update on a definitive timeline for these proposed changes.
