Political tension over the state of Cyprus Central Prisons

The political party AKEL and the Cypriot Ministry of Justice and Public Order are engaged in a public dispute regarding the deteriorating conditions within the Central Prisons of Cyprus. On August 27 and 28, 2026, AKEL representative Andreas Pasiourtidis criticized the government for failing to manage the facilities, labeling the prison system a "headquarters for organized crime." AKEL highlighted ongoing issues including violence, illegal use of mobile phones for criminal activities, suicides, and recent scandals involving inmate-led podcasts.

The Ministry of Justice responded by acknowledging long-standing systemic challenges, such as chronic overcrowding, understaffing, and inadequate infrastructure. While rejecting claims that the situation is being ignored, the Ministry stated that it is currently implementing measures to increase capacity, improve security, and address technological failures like the delayed activation of mobile phone jammers.
