New regulations for electric scooters proposed in Cyprus

The Cyprus Department of Public Works has initiated a public consultation for a new decree aimed at regulating electric scooter usage, which is open until September 26. According to Executive Engineer Charis Christodoulou, the proposed measures allow police or authorized municipal traffic officers to impound scooters for 30 to 90 days for specific violations, including riding in prohibited areas, operation by individuals under 17 years old, or the use of non-compliant devices.

Simultaneously, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos announced efforts to improve urban safety and infrastructure for micro-mobility. These plans include the creation of over 100 designated parking spots for scooters and the expansion of zones with a 30 km/h speed limit. The draft decree will be submitted to the Legal Service for technical and legal review following the conclusion of the public consultation process via the e-Consultation platform.

These initiatives follow ongoing concerns regarding traffic safety and the integration of personal mobility devices into city transport networks. The proposed regulatory framework represents a shift toward stricter enforcement and organized parking infrastructure to better manage the growth of electric scooters in public spaces.
