Nicosia introduces new regulations and seizure penalties for electric scooters

The Department of Public Works and the Nicosia Municipality have announced a new regulatory framework to address the rising use of electric scooters in the capital. The proposed decree, currently open for public consultation until September 26, 2026, includes provisions for the seizure of scooters for periods ranging from 30 to 90 days for specific violations. Key offenses warranting such measures include operating the device in restricted areas, use by individuals under the age of 17, and operating unauthorized equipment. Police officers and authorized municipal traffic wardens will have the power to enforce these seizures in addition to issuing fines.

To complement these enforcement measures, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos announced plans to establish over 100 dedicated parking spots for electric scooters throughout the city. The municipality is also extending zones where speed limits are restricted to 30 km/h to improve urban traffic flow and safety. Following the conclusion of the public consultation process, the draft decree will be submitted to the Legal Service for formal legal vetting before official implementation.
