EAC disputes allegations by Power Energy Cyprus regarding infrastructure delays

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has publicly responded to allegations by Power Energy Cyprus (PEC) that it is obstructing the launch of a new 260-megawatt power station. Reports suggested the EAC is deliberately blocking operations to maintain its market dominance and high electricity costs. The state authority dismissed these claims as defamatory, asserting that PEC lacks the necessary permits for its infrastructure.

The conflict centers on a seawater pumping station constructed by PEC on plot 558, located at the southwest boundary of the EAC Vasiliko Power Plant. The EAC states this land is exclusively leased to the Authority under a long-term agreement and characterizes the construction as an illegal intervention. The EAC emphasizes that maintaining an isolation strip around its facilities is standard international practice for safety and environmental protection. While PEC claims its plant is ready for operation, the dispute over the discharge pipes remains the primary obstacle to the facility coming online.
