Cypriot citizen released by occupation authorities after fine
A 45-year-old citizen of the Republic of Cyprus, who also holds British citizenship, was released on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after appearing before a military court in the occupied northern part of Nicosia. She had been detained the previous Saturday, August 22, at the Agios Dometios crossing point.
According to the prosecution, the woman entered the occupied areas on Friday, August 21, at 6:00 p.m. without completing mandatory immigration procedures and allegedly violated a restricted military zone. She was arrested the following afternoon while attempting to cross back into the government-controlled areas with the same vehicle, which was seized as evidence. The court imposed a fine of 15,000 Turkish lira, approximately €273. Her legal counsel stated that the defendant expressed remorse for the incident, attributing it to negligence, and noted that it was her first such offense.
