Qatari prime minister visits Tehran to revive stalled diplomacy

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani arrived in Tehran on Thursday to attempt to restart diplomatic efforts as the conflict between the United States and Iran nears its sixth month. The visit follows heightened tensions caused by Washington’s pledge to impose further economic sanctions, which Iranian officials have characterized as an act of economic war. The war, which began on February 28, has seen fighting largely subside, yet a significant diplomatic stalemate persists.

The core of the conflict involves control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which one-fifth of global oil supplies traditionally flows. A memorandum of understanding intended to conclude the conflict in June failed due to disagreements regarding the waterway between Iran and Oman. Simultaneously, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that an unidentified projectile struck a tanker in the strait on Thursday, causing a fire that was successfully extinguished without casualties. Despite acting as a key back-channel negotiator and facilitating a brief June ceasefire, Qatar faces a difficult path as both sides remain entrenched in their positions regarding regional influence and economic leverage.
