Cyprus Theatre Organisation closes the 2026 Epidaurus Festival with Ion

The Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC) concludes the 2026 Epidaurus Festival with two performances of Euripides' rarely staged tragedy, Ion. The production, which has toured across Cyprus, is scheduled for August 28 and 29, 2026, at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. Directed, translated, and dramaturgically adapted by Thomas Moschopoulos, the play explores themes of identity, belonging, and the intersection of myth and realism, with Stela Fyrogeni as Creusa, Neoklis Neokleous as Xuthus, and Giannis Tsoumarakis as Ion.

This event marks a significant milestone for THOC, as it returns to the Epidaurus stage with an independent production after an eight-year hiatus. The organisation’s history at the festival dates back to 1980, with previous appearances involving collaborations with the National Theatre of Greece and the National Theatre of Northern Greece. By closing this year’s festival, the production underscores the enduring cultural ties between Cypriot theatre and the historic Greek venue, offering a contemporary interpretation of the Delphic myth where characters seek oracles to resolve long-standing issues of infertility and heritage.
