Malaria outbreak at Frankfurt airport results in two deaths

A rare malaria outbreak at Frankfurt Airport has resulted in the deaths of two baggage handling employees. The infections were initially detected last month among six workers, with health authorities confirming the fatalities on Wednesday. Fraport, the airport operator, stated that the transmission is likely linked to mosquitoes transported into the facility via passenger luggage or aircraft from malaria-endemic regions.

The Frankfurt Public Health Department is currently investigating the cluster, which is notable due to the local transmission of the parasite in Germany. Officials have deployed specialized traps at the airport to capture and analyze mosquitoes to determine their exact species and geographical origin. Blood samples from the affected employees are also under laboratory examination to clarify if the infections originated from a single source or multiple mosquitoes.

All airport staff have been instructed to monitor their health closely and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear. While the Robert Koch Institute noted that the last malaria case at the airport occurred in 2023, the scale of this current outbreak remains a point of concern for public health officials.
