European Commission reaffirms support for Cyprus reunification

On Thursday, August 27, 2026, the European Commission reiterated its longstanding commitment to a comprehensive, fair, and viable solution to the Cyprus problem. During a press briefing, Commission spokesman Maciej Berestecki stated that the European Union remains firmly dedicated to the reunification of the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation. This position aligns with existing United Nations Security Council resolutions as well as the principles, values, and legislation of the European Union. Brussels expressed its readiness to actively support this process using all available tools and resources.

The spokesperson addressed inquiries regarding the status of ongoing negotiations following the recent visit of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus and the subsequent meeting between the leaders of the two communities. When asked about potential tensions, including reports regarding the cancellation of a Barcelona football academy training camp in the occupied north and whether such actions undermine confidence-building measures, Berestecki declined to comment on specific events. He emphasized that the Commission continues to follow its established policy and recalled that executive vice-president Raffaele Fitto has been appointed to oversee the portfolio. The European Union maintains that its primary objective regarding the region remains unchanged.
