Department of Labour Inspection warns of hazardous chemicals in school supplies

On August 27, 2026, the Department of Labour Inspection of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance issued a formal warning to consumers and parents regarding the safety of school supplies ahead of the upcoming academic year. Authorities highlighted that various products currently on the market may contain hazardous substances that pose significant health risks to children.

The department identified several specific concerns: plastic items may contain phthalates, which are classified as toxic to reproduction, and cadmium, a known carcinogen. Leather goods, including clothing and footwear, have been found to contain hexavalent chromium or Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF), both of which are sensitizers capable of causing allergic reactions. Furthermore, common school supplies such as superglues, markers, correction fluids, and paints may contain toxic organic solvents like benzene, chloroform, or toluene.

This advisory serves as a preventative measure to ensure that only compliant products reach the market. The authorities emphasize that items failing to meet safety legislation standards should not be sold. Consumers are urged to exercise increased vigilance when purchasing school supplies to avoid exposure to these carcinogenic and toxic materials.
