China donates 6,000 euros to the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus

On August 26, 2026, the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) received a donation of 6,000 euros from China. This contribution marks a continued commitment to the organization’s humanitarian mission, bringing the total financial support provided by China to the committee to 26,000 euros since 2019.

The funds are designated to support the CMP's ongoing project for the exhumation, identification, and return of remains to the families of missing individuals. By accelerating these efforts throughout 2026, the committee aims to conclude decades of uncertainty for the affected relatives. To date, the remains of 1,081 missing persons from both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities have been identified and returned to their families.

Established in 1981 under the auspices of the United Nations following an agreement between the island's two communities, the CMP relies heavily on international donations to function. While the European Union remains the primary financial contributor, the CMP continues to receive support from various nations to sustain its operation, which formally launched its excavation and identification program in 2006.
