Diplomatic tensions rise over cancellations of events in occupied Cyprus

Recent diplomatic efforts by the Republic of Cyprus have led to the cancellation of two major events in the occupied areas of the island: the EXIT festival scheduled for Kyrenia and a Barcelona Football Club academy camp. These cancellations occurred after the Republic of Cyprus raised awareness regarding the status of the unrecognized regime, preventing the normalization of occupied territories as separate entities in the eyes of the international community.

Following these developments, Tufan Erhurman, a Turkish Cypriot political figure, met with President Christodoulides and subsequently wrote to international officials, including Antonio Guterres and Ursula von der Leyen, claiming that such actions isolate Turkish Cypriots. Critics argue that Erhurman is using these events to push for international recognition of the illegal state entity under the guise of cultural and athletic exchange.

This incident highlights a broader debate regarding the Cyprus problem, which has remained unresolved for 52 years. While some voices argue that the Republic of Cyprus must remain committed to the Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation (BBF) framework to avoid further diplomatic losses, others warn that international complacency and the gradual acceptance of a two-state reality pose a systemic threat to the nation's sovereignty.
