United States re-evaluates military presence in Europe and pressures allies

The United States is actively pressuring European Union nations to assume greater responsibility for their own conventional defense. As part of a significant strategic shift, Washington is conducting an ongoing review of its military force posture across the European continent. Elbridge Colby, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Force Development, traveled to Brussels this Thursday to brief NATO allies on the status of this assessment.

The biannual review is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026 and is expected to result in substantive changes to the U.S. military footprint in Europe. Bloomberg reports that the U.S. has issued a detailed questionnaire to NATO allies, due this Friday, which includes inquiries regarding their public support for the foreign policy of President Donald Trump and potential restrictions on the use of American military bases. These developments signal a move toward American security self-reliance and a potential reduction of the U.S. role in European defense, contingent on the final findings of the ongoing Pentagon review.
