Cyprus concludes handball group stage at Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games

The Cyprus men's national handball team concluded its historic debut appearance at the 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto on August 27, 2026. In their final group stage match, Cyprus faced Greece, resulting in a 39-24 defeat. Greece needed a significant margin of victory to secure the top spot in Group B, which they achieved through this 15-goal difference, alongside Algeria’s victory over Tunisia. Despite the loss, the match served as a significant milestone for the Cypriot team, which will now compete in the classification rounds for positions 5-8, scheduled for August 29 and August 31.

While the handball tournament continues, the broader Cypriot delegation remains active across several disciplines, including sailing, tennis, shooting, and judo. The team currently holds a medal tally of two golds, two silvers, and two bronzes, placing them 11th among 26 competing nations. Future events include the judo competition starting August 28, with athletes Sofia Asvesta, Petros Christodoulidis, Odysseas Georgakis, and Kyprianos Andreou competing in various weight categories.
