Cyprus makes significant progress at the 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto

The 20th Mediterranean Games, held in Taranto, 2026, continue with diverse athletic activities as the Cypriot delegation pushes for more podium finishes. In the men's handball tournament, Cyprus concluded its group stage with a 39-24 loss to Greece on August 27, though the team successfully advanced to the classification matches for positions 5-8, scheduled for August 29 and 31. This event marked a historic milestone for the national team's first-ever appearance at the games.

Meanwhile, the Cypriot mission achieved significant success in judo on August 28. Athletes Petros Christodoulides (-66kg) and Sofia Asvesta (-52kg) secured spots in their respective gold medal finals after defeating opponents from Morocco, Spain, Portugal, and France. These performances guaranteed two additional medals for the delegation, which previously held six medals and an 11th-place standing among 26 participating nations. Other sports, including sailing, tennis, shooting, archery, and badminton, remain active in the competition schedule.
