Cyprus secures multiple medals at the 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto

At the 20th Mediterranean Games currently held in Taranto, Italy, the Cypriot delegation has achieved significant success across several disciplines. In judo, Sofia Asvesta secured the gold medal in the -52kg category by defeating Syria's Soumiya Iraoui, while Petros Christodoulides earned the silver medal in the -66kg category after a final match against Serbia's Marko Jorgic. This accomplishment marks a historic performance for Cypriot judo, bringing the country's total to nine medals, including four golds.

Furthermore, Iosif Kesidis claimed the gold medal in the men's hammer throw on August 30 with a top mark of 77.99 meters, outperforming Greek athlete Christos Frantzeskakis and Croatia's Matija Greguric. This victory represents the first athletics medal for Cyprus at these games. Meanwhile, track athlete Milan Trajkovic has qualified for the 110-meter hurdles final, while the women's 3x3 basketball team continues its pursuit of a quarterfinal spot. The national handball team concluded its campaign in the 5-8 placement matches, providing the squad with valuable high-level competition experience.
