Cyprus secures two judo medals at Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games
The 20th Mediterranean Games, currently held in Taranto, Italy, saw significant success for the Cypriot Olympic delegation on August 28, 2026. Sofia Asvesta won the gold medal in the women’s -52kg judo category after defeating Syrian opponent Soumiya Iraoui, while Petros Christodoulides claimed the silver medal in the men’s -66kg division following a final match against Serbia's Marko Jorgic. These victories brought Cyprus’s overall tally to three gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.
Earlier in the week, the men’s handball team concluded its group stage participation. Cyprus faced Greece in a match that ended 39-24 in favor of the Greeks, marking an emotional and historic moment for the two nations. Despite the loss, the Cypriot handball team is set to compete in the classification matches for positions 5-8 on August 29 and 31. The Cypriot mission continues its campaign across various disciplines, including sailing, tennis, and upcoming events in judo, as the delegation aims to improve its position in the medals table.
