Nestor plan activated following serious truck accident on Nicosia-Larnaca highway

On August 27, 2026, the 'Nestor Plan' was implemented for the first time to manage a major traffic incident on the Nicosia-Larnaca highway. The accident, which occurred at approximately 16:30, involved a truck carrying gravel and towing a second trailer, which overturned and blocked the road.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order coordinated an immediate response involving the Traffic Department and the Pera Chorio Police Station. Given the complexity of the cargo spill and the heavy vehicles involved, specialized private towing crews and cleaning teams were mobilized to clear the road. Traffic was diverted through secondary routes for several hours to alleviate congestion. The highway was reopened to the public around 20:20.

The Nestor Plan was specifically developed following a previous severe traffic event that left the highway closed for approximately seven hours. This current operation, while demanding due to the truck's articulated nature, was described by the authorities as a successful validation of the plan’s operational philosophy and coordination principles.
