18-year-old woman dies in waterfall accident near Veria
An 18-year-old woman died on August 27, 2026, after falling into a lake beneath a waterfall in the area of Dermata, within the municipality of Veria, Greece. The incident occurred in the afternoon, with emergency services receiving an alert via the 112 emergency number at approximately 16:15.
A large-scale rescue operation was launched, involving 12 firefighters from the local volunteer station and the Veria Fire Department, alongside four specialized divers from the 2nd EMAK underwater rescue team. Despite the rescue efforts and the victim's companion attempting to assist, the young woman was recovered from the water unconscious and subsequently handed over to EKAB ambulance services. She could not be resuscitated.
