Trump administration in talks for Venezuelan oil assets
The Trump administration is currently negotiating with the interim government of Venezuela to acquire ownership stakes in the country's oil resources. According to reports from Axios citing two U.S. officials on August 27, 2026, the potential agreement focuses on more than a dozen productive oil fields. These assets were previously held by former Venezuelan officials or Chinese interests. If finalized, this deal would grant the United States a share that could more than double its current oil reserves.
Under the proposed framework, private companies, including American firms, would be tasked with developing these oil fields. In exchange for the ownership stakes, these companies would provide direct revenue to the current Venezuelan administration led by interim President Rodriguez, who assumed power following the detention of the former leader by special forces. The White House has not yet provided an official comment, and the agreement remains under active development.
