Authorities seize large quantities of untaxed tobacco across Cyprus

Between August 23 and 28, 2026, Cypriot authorities conducted a series of coordinated operations against the possession and trade of untaxed tobacco products in Ayia Napa, Polis Chrysochous, Nicosia, and at border crossings. Customs and police officers seized significant quantities of cigarettes, heated tobacco sticks, rolling tobacco, and shisha tobacco that lacked mandatory health warnings and security features. Several arrests were made, including a 47-year-old kiosk owner in Polis Chrysochous who paid a €4,000 fine for his release, and a 60-year-old man in Nicosia who is expected to face court proceedings regarding a detention order.

Additional inspections at the Ledra Street and Ayios Dhometios crossings resulted in three separate cases of illicit tobacco smuggling, with one individual paying a €790 fine. In Ayia Napa, authorities discovered 51 cartons of heated tobacco and 35 kg of shisha tobacco during an investigation on August 26; however, no suspects were immediately identified for this specific stash. The authorities continue to examine the evidence gathered to identify further supply chains linked to the illegal trade. The seized items are scheduled for destruction in accordance with legal procedures.
