Authorities seize large quantities of untaxed tobacco in Cyprus
Between August 23 and 28, 2026, Cypriot authorities conducted a series of operations to combat the illegal trade of tobacco products. Customs agents intercepted three cases at the Ledra Street and Ayios Dhometios crossing points, including the arrest of a French citizen carrying 2.25 kg of rolling tobacco, resulting in out-of-court settlements totaling €5,090.
Simultaneous operations by police and customs officers in Paphos and Nicosia led to the arrest of a 47-year-old and a 60-year-old. The Paphos search uncovered significant amounts of rolling tobacco, shisha tobacco, and heated cigarettes, while the Nicosia operation, conducted via judicial warrant, seized 361 cartons and 68 packs of cigarettes, 111 cartons of heated cigarettes, 1,400 cigarillos, 30 cigars, and over 1.5 kg of various tobacco.
The 47-year-old suspect paid an immediate fine and was released, while the 60-year-old’s case remains under investigation by the Customs Department. The seized products are slated for destruction, and local police stations continue their follow-up examinations.
