Conflict over the modernization of Makarios Avenue in Nicosia

Tensions have escalated regarding the urban redevelopment of Makarios Avenue in central Nicosia. Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos recently stated he is preparing a package of proposals to address concerns and improve the area, while rejecting claims that the street’s current pedestrianized state is a failure. He emphasizes that the renovated urban environment is viewed positively by both local and international visitors.

Conversely, the Joint Action Platform for the Revival of the Urban Commercial Core of Every City argues that the project has caused an 'artificial decline,' noting that two out of every three shops on the avenue are now vacant. The platform demands the restoration of two-way traffic for vehicles, asserting that the current layout discourages shoppers. While authorities have expressed concerns that changing the street's design could jeopardize European funding, the platform contends that the EU has a formal mechanism for addressing sustainability deviations that does not involve immediate or arbitrary sanctions.
