Russian fugitive detained in the occupied north of Cyprus

Alexei Sokpa, a 43-year-old Russian national wanted by Greek authorities in connection with the murder of Vangelis Zabounis and involvement in the “Edik” criminal ring, was arrested on Monday by occupation authorities in the village of Agios Amvrosios, Kyrenia. Local reports indicate he had been residing illegally in the occupied territories for 389 days and allegedly frequented a military-restricted zone to cross into the Republic of Cyprus.

Authorities in the Republic of Cyprus and Greece are currently coordinating efforts to secure his extradition. The strategy involves the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Crime, which facilitates informal cooperation through the United Nations. Former police chief Kypros Michaelides is reportedly leading the Greek Cypriot side's efforts to coordinate the handover. While some reports suggest Sokpa may eventually be surrendered to Greece, no official decision regarding his transfer has been announced. Meanwhile, investigations continue into his contacts and potential involvement in other illicit activities during his time in Cyprus.
