Significant temperature drop and extreme weather expected in Cyprus

Cyprus is bracing for a significant shift in weather conditions on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Michalis Mouskos, Senior Meteorological Officer at the Department of Meteorology, announced that temperatures are expected to drop by up to 9 degrees Celsius, falling from Friday's highs of 39°C inland and 34°C on the coast to approximately 30°C on Saturday.

The weather shift will bring widespread rain and thunderstorms across the island throughout the day and until early evening. Authorities intend to issue an official weather warning on Friday afternoon, which has a high probability of being classified as 'orange' due to the intensity of the expected phenomena. There is also a possibility of isolated rain and hail occurring on Friday prior to the main front.

From Sunday onwards, temperatures will begin a gradual recovery, returning to seasonal norms of around 36°C inland and 32°C on the coast by Tuesday. While the main system will pass, atmospheric instability is expected to persist in mountainous regions, bringing isolated showers from Sunday through Tuesday. Meteorological officials have urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads during the period of extreme weather and to avoid unnecessary travel.
