Cyprus braced for severe storms and sharp temperature drop

Cyprus is set to experience severe weather on Saturday, August 29, as the Department of Meteorology has issued an orange weather warning in effect from 10:00 to 19:00. An incoming northern disturbance is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall, ranging from 55mm to 70mm, along with thunderstorms, hail, and strong, gusty winds that could reach 6 to 7 on the Beaufort scale in some areas.

The weather shift will lead to a sharp temperature drop of approximately 9°C, with highs falling to around 30°C inland and on the coast, compared to Friday’s highs of 39°C and 34°C respectively. Authorities have warned the public to exercise caution, and local municipalities and marinas have advised residents and boat owners to secure property and avoid sea activities. Meteorologists describe these conditions as highly unusual for late August, comparing the rare atmospheric pattern to a notable event from 1971.

The volatile conditions are expected to be short-lived. A gradual recovery is forecasted starting Sunday, with temperatures returning to seasonal averages of 36°C inland and 32°C on the coast by Tuesday. While the main disturbance will pass by Saturday evening, isolated instability and light rain may persist in mountainous areas for several days.
