Cyprus issues orange weather warning for severe storms on Saturday

The Department of Meteorology in Cyprus has issued an orange weather warning effective from 10:00 to 19:00 on Saturday, 29 August 2026. A meteorological disturbance originating from the north is expected to bring severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall ranging from 55mm to 70mm, hail, and strong, gusty winds to various parts of the island. Meteorological officer Michalis Mouskos confirmed that mountain regions, the interior, and the northern and eastern parts of the island are most likely to be affected.

The adverse conditions will lead to a sharp temperature drop, with values falling to approximately 30°C inland and along the coast, compared to the higher temperatures recorded on Friday. Authorities, including the Civil Defense, have advised the public to exercise caution, while marinas have notified boat owners to secure their vessels. Despite the intensity of the storm, the weather is expected to stabilize rapidly. Temperatures are projected to start rising again on Sunday, gradually returning to seasonal norms of around 36°C inland and 32°C on the coast by Tuesday. Isolated rain may persist in mountainous areas over the coming days, but the primary weather event is expected to subside by Saturday evening.
