Severe weather alert issued for Cyprus on Saturday

Cyprus is bracing for a significant weather shift on Saturday, August 29, as a northern disturbance and seasonal low-pressure system bring unstable conditions to the island. The Department of Meteorology has issued an orange warning effective from 10:00 to 19:00, forecasting heavy rainfall between 55mm and 70mm, accompanied by thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution, while marinas have advised boat owners to secure their vessels and avoid seafaring during the event.

Temperatures are expected to plummet from Friday's highs of 39°C inland and 34°C on the coast to approximately 30°C on Saturday. Meteorological officer Michalis Mouskos noted that while this sharp drop will be brief, it marks a notable departure from seasonal norms. The weather is anticipated to improve by Sunday, with temperatures gradually climbing back toward 36°C inland and 32°C along the coast by Tuesday, although some residual instability and isolated rain remain possible in mountainous areas.

This weather pattern is described by meteorologists as highly unusual for late August, with analysts comparing the atmospheric setup to a rare event from 1971. While dynamic weather is less common than summer thermal instability, the current disturbance is expected to have a broad impact before clearing.
