European Council President Antonio Costa to visit Nicosia on September 4
The newly elected President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, is scheduled to visit Nicosia on September 4, 2026. This trip is part of an extensive diplomatic tour across European Union member state capitals, known as the "Tour des Capitales." During his visit to Cyprus, Costa is slated to hold formal discussions with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.
The primary objective of the tour is to engage with heads of state and government to coordinate the future agenda of the European Union. A central theme of these discussions is the preparation of the next Multi-annual Financial Framework (MFF), aiming to build consensus and address budgetary priorities ahead of upcoming European Council summits and international meetings.
The tour is structured in weekly phases. Following an initial week of visits to Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and the Czech Republic, the second phase begins on September 2. This segment includes meetings in Luxembourg, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria before the scheduled arrival in Cyprus on September 4.
