Cyprus Defense Ministry enhances security at Kalo Chorio shooting range

The Cypriot Ministry of Defense has announced a series of security measures at the Kalo Chorio shooting range following the discovery of an unexploded old illumination projectile and recent fire incidents in the area. Ministry spokesperson Sofianos Filippidis confirmed that the initiatives aim to enhance public safety and prevent unauthorized access or illegal dumping of military materials.

Key measures currently underway include the widening of firebreak zones and the implementation of 24-hour surveillance. The Ministry is planning to deploy mobile patrols immediately and is developing infrastructure for a permanent guard post. Additionally, officials are conducting a study to design and install a surveillance system utilizing fixed cameras to monitor the site continuously.

Regarding protocol, Filippidis clarified that current military procedures require specialized teams to inspect training grounds after exercises to locate and neutralize any unexploded ordnance on-site. These security upgrades follow concerns regarding past safety lapses at the range, with the Ministry now moving to establish a more rigorous monitoring framework to mitigate future risks to the surrounding environment and residents.
