Cyprus ministry enhances security at Kalo Chorio shooting range

The Cypriot Ministry of Defense has announced a series of security enhancements at the Kalo Chorio shooting range following the discovery of unexploded ordnance on-site. Ministry spokesperson Sofianos Filippidis confirmed that the found items, including an old 81mm shell, have been successfully removed and destroyed. These incidents have prompted the authorities to implement more rigorous safety protocols to protect the surrounding area and citizens.

To prevent further unauthorized access and safety risks, the ministry is currently widening firebreaks around the range. Plans are also underway to establish 24-hour security presence, initially through mobile patrols, to be followed by the construction of a permanent guard post. Additionally, the military is studying the implementation of a fixed camera surveillance system. The ministry maintains that specialized units already perform sweeps for unexploded ammunition following major exercises.

In a related development, the ministry confirmed that the Tseri shooting range is being closed as part of a broader strategy to relocate military activities to other facilities. The authorities are prioritizing ongoing safety measures at all active sites to prevent future hazards.
