ETEK proposes simulation exercises for the 'Nestor' road safety plan

The Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) has announced plans to conduct a series of simulation exercises to test the 'Nestor' road safety system. This follows the system's recent application during a serious traffic accident on the Nicosia-Larnaca highway, which highlighted the need for operational improvements. ETEK President Constantinos Constantinou emphasized that while the initiative is a positive step long supported by the chamber, the plan must be tested against various hypothetical scenarios to ensure efficiency and clear role definitions.

Key areas for evaluation include emergency responses to specific hazards, such as fuel spills on road surfaces. ETEK has explicitly stated that closing public road networks is an unacceptable practice and urged for better traffic management strategies that do not disrupt essential infrastructure. The upcoming exercises aim to address these concerns by clarifying responsibilities and refining the response protocols for diverse incident types. The Chamber intends to move beyond evaluating the recent specific incident to ensure the system remains robust and capable of handling complex emergency situations effectively in the future.
