Panama Canal auction records highest fee for priority transit

On August 28, 2026, it was reported that a record $5.3 million fee was paid to secure priority passage through the Panama Canal. The South Korean firm SK Gas won the auction for the LPG carrier vessel G. Spirit to traverse the canal on September 1, surpassing the previous record of $4.6 million set earlier in August.

This unprecedented cost reflects the increasing pressure on global maritime logistics caused by severe drought conditions. The Panama Canal Authority is struggling with reduced water levels in the Gatun and Alajuela lakes, which are critical for the operation of the canal's lock system. The current climate impacts, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, have significantly reduced rainfall in the region.

As a consequence of the water shortage, the Panama Canal Authority has moved to restrict daily vessel transit numbers. Starting September 3, the authority will begin implementing gradual reductions in the number of ships allowed to use the waterway each day to preserve remaining water resources.
