Omonia learns its Europa League opponents in historic draw
Following a successful 4-2 victory over Sint-Truiden, Omonia Nicosia has officially qualified for the Europa League League Phase. During the draw held in Monaco on August 28, 2026, the Cypriot club was placed into a challenging schedule, set to face Benfica, Celtic, Celta Vigo, and Besiktas at home in the GSP Stadium, while traveling to play Juventus, Rennes, Celje, and Nijmegen.
The inclusion of Besiktas has drawn significant attention due to historical sensitivities regarding Turkish teams playing in Cyprus, echoing the 1986 events involving APOEL. Omonia's campaign is scheduled to commence on September 16, 2026, with an opening home match against Celta Vigo. The league phase will span until January 2027, with the final fixture against Besiktas also taking place in Nicosia.
This marks Omonia’s third appearance in the Europa League League Phase and its sixth European league stage qualification in seven years. While logistical challenges for travel and security remain points of discussion, the club prepares for a grueling schedule that tests their standing against high-profile European opponents.
