Kronos field set to link Cyprus and Egypt in new energy corridor

The Kronos gas field, located in block 6 of the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone and developed by Eni and TotalEnergies, is expected to become a cornerstone for a new Eastern Mediterranean energy corridor. Production is scheduled to commence in 2028, with four subsea wells projected to yield up to 14.2 million cubic meters of natural gas daily. The extracted gas will be transported via pipeline to Egypt for processing at the Zohr facilities and subsequent liquefaction at Damietta for export to Europe, with an estimated annual capacity of 2.8 million tons of LNG.

This project serves as a strategic response to Egypt’s domestic supply shortages and Europe’s urgent need to diversify its energy sources away from Russian reliance. Analysts suggest that while Cypriot volumes are modest, they are highly valuable for regional stability. The success of this initiative depends on adhering to the 2028 timeline, which would effectively transform the complementary needs of Egypt’s infrastructure and Cyprus’s untapped resources into a sustainable commercial model for future Mediterranean energy developments.
